The long ball lasted longer than the rain did on Sunday, long enough to qualify two for the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship in Mesquite, Nevada.
Played at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort in Qualicum Beach from Friday through Sunday, the long drive qualifier, one of four in Canada, saw some big competition and even bigger hitters as competitors tried to out-drive each other for the two spots in Nevada.
This marks the second year in a row that Pheasant Glen has been the venue for this event and it couldn’t have gone any better, except for the weather.
“Friday was good, we had some dry weather and the conditions were ideal,” coordinator Andy Robins said.
“We had more competitors come out on Saturday to try and qualify but both Saturday and Sunday brought the rain, so it was a little tougher for them to hit it long.”
The rain didn’t seem to slow a few hitters down as the balls kept sailing out, consistently, past 330 yards.
The winning drive went to Myles DeBrincat, which came on his second to last attempt. Not bad for his first time in the competition.
“Yeah, this was my first time in it so I’m pretty pumped about winning,” DeBrincat said moments after his first-place finish, which was based on his total driving record on the day.
“Now I get to head down to Nevada for the chance to compete in the world’s, not too bad for my first time out here.” Jesse Pettersen finished in the second qualifying spot and owned the longest single drive of the day, booming one 355 yards.
