Two Castlegar hockey teams were in action Friday, March 8, 2013 with wildly different results.
The KIJHL Castlegar Rebels were in Fruitvale for game four of their second-round series and were swiftly handed a 6 – 2 loss which evened the matchup at two games each.
Beaver Valley Nitehawks general manager and head coach, Terry Jones, confirmed information that first appeared on twitter; saying in an email one of the Nitehawks players was taken to hospital for tests, showing symptoms of possible concussion.
“We should know more in the morning,” said Jones. “Very confused, nauseous, and bad headaches. All we know for now.”
The game was a penalty-filled affair from start to finish with 48 penalty minutes being handed to Castlegar and 38 to Beaver Valley.
The Rebels first goal of the game came from 19-year-old Bryan Lubin at 11:01 of the second, assisted by Stuart Walton and Dylan Bowerman. It was Lubin’s fifth goal of the playoffs and first since getting three against the Spokane Braves on Feb. 23 in round one.
Walton had an assist on Lubin’s goal to push his team-leading, playoff points total to 14.
The Castlegar team got its second goal from Bowerman with only 3:11 to play but by then it was all over.
The Beaver Valley Nitehawks put up three goals in the first, another in the second and two more in the third for a decisive victory. Scorers were Ryan Edwards (2), Taylor Stafford (2), Keanan Patershuk and Levi Kress.
The BCIHL Selkirk Saints , meanwhile, had an impressive 3 – 0 shutout win over the visiting University of VIctoria team at the Castlegar Recreation Centre.
Alex Sirard was in net for the win and the team played solidly in front of him.
Selkirk took an early lead at 15:43 of the first period when Mason Spear got what seemed like a clean goal but had referee Mike Boisvert talking to the linesman briefly.
Selkirk was out front in shots 27 – 12 after the first but there was no scoring by either side in the second.
Logan Proulx (PP) and Cody Fidgett got the final two goals of the game in the third; Fidgett’s marker with under two minutes to play was a particularly sweet backhand beating Gill up high.
Fidgett and Spear also had assists on the night, to go along with their goals.
The final shot clock read 37- 13 in favour of Selkirk.
UVic goaltender Sunny Gill stopped a number of point-blank shots in an outstanding effort that earned him the 3rd star.
As is the case most often with shut-outs, the 1st star went to the winning goaltender, Alex Sirard.
