The U17 Gold boys soccer Island final between Cowichan and Powell River took an extra week and a few extra kicks to decide.
The visiting Powell River team was unable to make the trip on April 7 because of ferry cancellations, so the match was played at the Sherman Road turf last Sunday.
Although Cowichan carried the play for most of the game, they were unable to score, and regulation time ended in a 0-0 draw, going directly to penalty kicks.
Although Justin Marinier and Nick Gurzinski scored in the penalty round, Cowichan ended up on the wrong side of a 4-2 score. Sensational all season, Cowichan goalkeeper Jonathan Walker was outstanding in the penalty kicks, getting a touch on three of Powell River’s shots.
Marinier was named Cowichan’s Player of the Game for his solid defensive play and for posing a constant threat on attack.
“Despite the loss, Cowichan can be very proud of the way they played and for having a successful season, including topping the U17 league and their trip to Hawaii,” coach Ron Glass commented.
