The UBC Okanagan Heat will hold an intra-squad game Tuesday (5 p.m.) at VSS.

The VSS Panthers senior girls are sponsoring the event. Admission is by a Food Bank donation.

Lenai Schmidt, who played volleyball at VSS in Grades 8-10 before transferring to Kal for her final two years, helping the Lakers claim the 2008 pro- vincial senior AA title, is a fifth-year Libero with the Heat.

Heat outside hitter Megan Festival (fifth year, Calgary) and her Alberta teammates struck gold at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.

Alberta pulled off a stunning comeback, win- ning the last three sets to defeat B.C. 3-2 (21-25, 13-25, 25-13, 25-20, 15-9). B.C. had only lost two sets in the entire tournament.

Kelowna native and Heat sophomore Kaitlynn Given was second on Team B.C. with 11 kills.

Brianna Beamish and Katy Klomps, both of Surrey, and North Vancouver products Emily Oxland and Katie Wuttunnee, also represented

UBCO on Team B.C. Oxland was superb in her freshman year, as a setter, making the Canada West All-Star team. Klomp, a middle, recorded 1.30 blocks per set (4th best in CIS) last season.

After a hard-fought playoff loss to Mt. Royal Cougars to conclude the 2012-2013 Canada West season, the Heat will begin preparations for this season, hosting friendly scrimmages and games this weekend with the Saskatchewan Huskies and the Trinity Western Spartans.

Scrimmages with Saskatchewan and Trinity Western go today at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and follow Saturday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. before finishing Sunday at 10 a.m.

The Heat will miss the services of Alexandra Basso (Kelowna), their only graduating player from last season. The core remains intact and boasts impressive depth. A majority of fifth-year play- ers will bring poise to the Heat court, while head coach Steve Manuel will have the added advantage of infusing talent from the bench.
