The University of the Fraser Valley baseball team took their lumps in a pair of weekend road games, giving up 26 combined runs to the Okanagan College Coyotes.
The teams played a double header Friday at Elk Stadium in Kelowna.
Vernon native Dylan Emmons got the start in the opener and had a rough outing in a 12-7 loss, giving up five earned runs over six innings. Santana McKay (Chilliwack) got roughed up in one inning of relief, giving up four hits and seven runs, but only one of those was earned as the UFV defence committed two errors behind him.
The Cascade bats banged out 10 hits, with Colin Kellington (Chilliwack) and Riley Jepson (Kamloops) counting for three apiece. One of Kellington’s knocks was a double and Jepson clubbed his first homerun of the year.
UFV’s pitching problems continued in the second game, a 14-3 loss.
North Vancouver’s Evan Peterson was hit hard, giving up nine hits over two innings. Ten runs crossed the plate in the first inning alone, but Peterson wasn’t the only culprit with the defence committing three errors.
The UFV bats managed eight hits and four walks against Coyote pitching.
Kellington had another multi-hit day with a single and a double, while Brendan Ludwig (Kelowna) reached base twice on singles. Liam Campbell (Chilliwack) drove in two Cascade runs.
UFV was set to host the Coyotes on Saturday, but the doubleheader at Fairfield Island was rained out, the fifth and sixth games the Cascades have lost to the elements this season.
Their next Canadian Colleges Baseball Conference action comes Saturday and Sunday as they face the Vancouver Island Mariners. First pitch for Saturday’s home games at Fairfield Island are set for noon and 3 p.m.
