Undermanned Okanagan Rockets push win streak to 10

With a short bench, Kelowna's major midget team sweeps two games on the road from the Valley West Hawks.

Make it 10 in a row and counting for the Okanagan Rockets.

With a weekend sweep of the defending champion Valley West Hawks, the Rockets’ B.C. Major Midget League winning streak now sits at 10 games.

An undermanned Rockets’ squad took down the Hawks twice in Delta to push their season mark to 11-1 and into a first-place tie with the Cariboo Cougars.

The Rockets displayed a flair for the dramatic, scoring the winning goals on both Saturday and Sunday in the final minute.

On Saturday, Jeffrey Karpowich scored on the power play with just 36 seconds left as the Rockets downed the Hawks 4-3.

On Sunday, Coleton Bilodeau played hero with the decisive goal at 19:43 of the third period in a 3-2 Okanagan victory.

Forward Eli Zummack was away at the World Under 17 Challenge, while Wyatt Head and Jordan Robinson were summoned for a pair of games by the BCHL’s West Kelowna Warriors. The Rockets also lost two players to injury during the opening game of the set on Saturday.

“It was a gutsy effort by our guys,” said Rockets head coach Eric Blais. “I’m proud of them. The wins are a nice bonus, but what I’m most happy is just the way they played. We were disciplined and very structured. We played patient and selfless hockey.”

The Rockets head back to the road this coming weekend as visit the Northeast Chiefs for two games in Coquitlam.
