The Vernon Liquor Store North Okanagan United brushed back Monashee’s Pub 1-0 Thursday night at Marshall Field #4.
Darlene Wiese buried a loose ball after a cross by Carla Gibson as United improved to 7-7-2 in the North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Association Masters Division.
Playing with no subs, NOU got tireless efforts from everybody on a hot summer’s night. Keeper Sue Barss was rock-solid, while Tania Willett was stellar at centre midfield and Penny Crebo-Dolman and Karen Benn anchored the defence.
Speedsters Lena Dean and Melissa Jacobs applied good pressure up front. Monashee’s dipped to 3-11-2.
Meanwhile, Vernon Kal Tire battled the host Lake Country to a 1-1 draw in Okanagan Oldtimers 50+ Soccer League play at Reiswig Park.
The Tiremen gave up an own goal in the fifth minute, but equalized midway through the second half when Denis Chabot settled down a high cross from Jenne Huberts and nailed the ball hard and low to the right corner.
Huberts, who was stopped four or five times by Lake Country keeper George Heiss in tight, was named the Heineken Man of the Match.
Midfielder Jim Sparrow and defender Rob Parkin had superb games for the 6-8-3 Tiremen, whose keeper Gord Campbell also shined.
The Vernon Stars won by default over shortstaffed Kelowna #1, improving to 11-4-2.
