United dealt first loss, 49ers remain unbeaten

Cowichan United suffered their first loss of the Vancouver Island Soccer League season last Saturday, but remain atop the Div. 2 standings.

United were beaten 2-1 on the road against Vic West Casuals at Finlayson Park. Cowichan’s lone goal came from Dan Citra, who moved into a tie with Stevan Zorich for the team scoring lead with five goals apiece.

With the loss, United’s record dropped to 7-1, the same as Westcastle United, but Cowichan remains first due to goal differential.

United will host Nanaimo at the Sherman Road turf this Saturday at 6 p.m.

In Div. 3A, Cowichan Red Arrow managed a 2-2 tie with Hellas FC at Blanshard Park last Sunday on  goals by Jordan Crocker and Hector Avendano. Red Arrow will host Gorge Sunday at 2:15 p.m.

In Masters A, the Cowichan 49ers kept up their undefeated streak with a 2-0 win over CB Red Barn Bobcats at Sherman Road last Saturday. Game MVP George Thomas and Nick Zuback did the scoring, while Rob McIntyre earned the shutout. The Niners remain in first place as they face UVic Alumni this Friday.

The Masters C Cowichan Steelheads lost 2-0 to Prospect Lake last Friday and will be looking for a win when they host Peninsula FC this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

In the Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association, the Div. 2 Cowichan Outlaws tied Bays United 1-1 last Sunday and will visit Peninsula this Sunday.

The Over 30A Cowichan Cougars lost 2-1 to Gorge last Sunday and will visit Prospect Lake this Sunday.
