Four Cowichan Rugby Football Club players helped the Vancouver Island Crimson Tide women’s side continue its four-year run as Ruth Hellerud-Brown Cup champions.
Cowichan’s Sherry Spence served as co-captain for the Tide and was joined on the team by Michelle Flowers, Rebecca Saari and Angie Davies.
The Tide swept their way through a home-and-home series against the Vancouver Wave, winning 46-24 on the first leg at Oak Bay’s Windsor Park on May 13.
“It was a tough game,” Spence said. “We finally have the hot weather, there was tough competition, and the hardest part was that we never played as a team. It did make for some unusual errors.”
The second stage at Klahanie Park in West Vancouver a week later resulted in a closer score as the Tide prevailed 26-12 to keep their hold on the cup.
The CRFC also had seven players on the men’s Crimson Tide team that competed for the McKechnie Cup, which was won by the Vancouver Tyee. Noah Dobson, Kyle Joe, Jenner Teufel, Carlin Hamstra, Taylor de Souza, Andrew Gudmundseth, Malcolm Sacht and Ty Jones all suited up for the Tide, while former Piggies head coach Gord McGeachy served as Vancouver Island coach.
