Vancouver Island Raiders blanked 38-0

Team, including local players, struggled with penalties

It was a tough day at the office for the Vancouver Island Raiders football team, as they were blanked by the Okanagan Sun by a score of 38–0.

Former Ballenas Whalers Liam O’Brien, Dustin Rodriguez and the rest of the Raiders had a tough time finding paydirt against the Sun, who blew the game wide open in the second quarter, scoring 24 of their 38 points in the frame.

O’Brien completed 13 of 22 passes on the day for 145 yards but couldn’t manage to connect for a touchdown. One of his passes found fellow Whaler alum Rodriguez, who hauled in his only reception on the day for eight yards.

Rodriguez was busy from the special teams aspect of the game, having the duty of punter for the team.

“D-Rod” found himself doing the honours 10 times in the game, compared to just three punts for the team out of the Okanagan.

Penalties were also the story of the game for the Raiders, who took 15 in total while the Sun had only seven flags thrown against them.

The Raiders will be back in action this coming weekend in their home opener, as they look to bounce back from this tough loss against the same Okanagan Sun squad.

Kickoff is at 4 p.m., Saturday, August 16.
