At their second season, the NVSS girls rugby team have qualified for the provincial tournament next spring.

For the second season in a row, Vanderhoof’s rugby girls reign supreme in the northwest zone.

Hosting the zone championships for the first time last weekend, the NVSS girls rugby team triumphed over Smithers at 22 to 10 in the finals match on Saturday morning.

“We really brought it together this time,” said Kia Bruvold, one of the team’s two coaches. “Really happy to bring it home at home.”

She added, “It proved that they were listening.”

Competition was tight among the five junior and senior teams across the region — including Smithers and Houston —as round robin matches on Friday afternoon came to a draw between Houston and Smithers, as well as Houston and Vanderhoof at 5 to 5.

Friday’s matches had ended with Vanderhoof defeating Smithers 37 to 5.

Bruvold said the amount of support at home helped the rugby team as well, as their work and training paid off.

“They did us proud,” she said. “Hope they’ll do us proud again in the spring.”

The NVSS girls rugby team will head south to compete in the provincial championship next April.
