Roadrunners varsity quarterback Kevin Wiens pushes his way through traffic last Friday afternoon against Rick Hansen.

Mission secondary’s senior football team plowed through Rick Hansen last Wednesday, keeping the visiting team from scoring anything until the final quarter.

“We really spread the ball around today and got lots of guys involved in the game,” said coach Kevin Watrin of the Roadrunners’ 43-7 performance.

Quarterback Kevin Wiens and Brenden Atkinson put the Roadrunners onto an early lead, each scoring a touchdown on four-yard and 50-yard rushes, respectively.

Wiens made a 29-yard pass to tight end Rhys Parry who carried it in for another six points, while standout running back Jesse Forcier pushed 41 yards into the endzone.

Hadley Gwyn caught a 30-yard Wiens pass in the fourth, while Evan Horton stepped up from the junior varsity team and quarterbacked the team in the final quarter, making a 30-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Orydzuk.

This win puts the Roadrunners in first place in the Eastern standings with a 2-0 record in conference play.

Junior varsity

The Mission Roadrunners junior varsity team is riding high on four straight wins, putting them at the top of the standings in the AA Eastern conference.

On Oct. 12, the Roadrunners routed Abbotsford Collegiate 38-0, with Grade 9 wide receiver/running back Jesse Walker earning player of the game honours with a 62-yard touchdown catch early in the first quarter, followed by a five-yard TD run in the second. He continued to wow the crowd with an impressive 81-yard kickoff return for six points at the start of the second half.

“Jesse is a talented athlete and a great kid who is fairly new to the game of football,” said coach John Kapty.

“We’ve been hoping for and expecting this kind of breakout game for a while. He played really well.”

Quarterback Evan Horton threw two touchdown passes, including one to Wayde Carpenter. Running backs Emmanuel Obasohan and Eric Heckhausen posted touchdowns as well.

“We’re looking towards the playoffs. Obviously after last year expectations are high, and we have a long way to go to get back to there,” said Kapty.

“So far I’m happy with the growth and improvement our team has shown so far. If we continue on this path, we’ll be OK.”

A week earlier, Mission faced off against Rick Hansen, and despite the coach noting it wasn’t his team’s best effort, the junior varsity squad pulled out a 25-7 win.

“It was a wet, muddy game, and our passing game was weak, partly because of the rain,” he said.

Obasohan rushed for 142 yards in that game with one touchdown, including a game-breaking 62-yard touchdown run. Horton rushed for 12 points, while Grade 9 running back Peter Kulba added the final TD for the win.

“Hansen played hard, and gave us a real test. I was encouraged to see our guys step it up in the second half and really take it to them with our ground game,” Kapty said.

The Roadrunners played yesterday afternoon against Pitt Meadows, after The Record’s press deadline.
