Mission Secondary School’s varsity and junior varsity teams have gone undefeated in regular play this year, each winning their conference championships.
This marks the varsity team’s first-ever conference title, while the JV has claimed the title three years straight.
The senior football team took its honours last Friday afternoon, putting down Abbotsford Collegiate in decisive fashion, 39-6, in a game that saw running backs Jesse Forcier and Brenden Atkinson run for 218 and 149 yards, respectively, each scoring two touchdowns.
“We are all proud of our team’s effort today in capturing our first varsity conference championship,” said coach Kevin Watrin after the game. “As expected, Abby gave us a good test on both sides of the ball. With the kind of day Forcier and Atkinson had today, a lot of credit has to go to our offensive line again (Tom Clarkson, Richard Johnson, Ryan Pye, Zac Chamberland, Alex McCall and Ben Wells). Our defense played well, giving up some yards, but stopped Abby when we needed to.”
Going forward, the senior squad shifts focus to the playoffs, which begin this Saturday with a game at BC Place against Duchess Park.
Junior varsity
The JV Roadrunners beat Samuel Robertson Technical (SRT) out of Maple Ridge 39-12 last week to finish the season, 7-0.
The SRT game was dominated in the first quarter by linebacker Wayde Carpenter, who had three interceptions and returned them all for touchdowns.
“Wayde has seven interceptions this season and has returned five of them for touchdowns. His football instincts are very good and he just keeps making big plays for us,” said coach John Kapty.
Other standout performances were Emmanuel Obasohan, who rushed for 173 yards including TD runs of 85 and 65 yards. Running back Erick Heckhausen added a 60-yard touchdown run.
“Our offensive line was absolutely dominant, led by Izzy Cummings, Arjun Bhogal and Aaron Van Stight. The holes they created made it easy for the running backs today,” said Kapty. “It really was a team effort, and that’s what we need heading into playoffs. Our team doesn’t mind who gets the touchdowns, as long as we keep winning.”
