The Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers Association brings the Vedder Mountain Bike Festival to Cultus Lake this weekend.
The two-day event starts Saturday with the Vedder Mountain Classic race, which is sanctioned by Cycling B.C.
First run in 1982, it is one of the oldest mountain bike races in North America. Pro riders like four-time national champion Ricky Federau discovered their love for mountain biking competing in this race.
“It’s the first race I have ever watched, it’s what got me hooked on mountain biking, and to have it back here is really special,” said Federau in a news release.
The Vedder Mountain Classic has short and long-course options and attracts riders ranging in skill from novice to pro. There is also a kid’s race for children ages 5-12.
Sunday’s highlight is the running of the Fraser Valley section of the MEC BC Enduro Series. This race is part of the Canadian National Enduro Championship, North American Enduro Tour and is an Enduro World Series Qualifier. Chilliwack’s Max Leyen is in the field after taking third in the pro men’s race last year.
Last year’s Vedder Mountain Bike Festival attracted hundreds of race participants, including some from as far away as Switzerland.
This year’s festival includes group rides, bike demos, prize giveaways, beverage gardens, local food vendors and an after-party.
