Risling scores in Vees loss to Bandits

Ryley Risling opened the scoring, while Mathew Robson made 31 saves in a Penticton Vees 2-1 overtime loss to the Brooks Bandits in RBC Cup action Sunday.

Risling scored his first goal of the championshp with 2:10 remaining in the opening frame at the Cobourg Community Centre. The Vees held an 8-6 edge in shots, while Bandits goalie Mitch Benson made 20 saves in the win.

There was no scoring in the middle frame in which the Vees were outshot 9-5.

In the final period the Bandits pressured the Vees firing 12 shots. The Bandits got the equalizer 33 seconds into the period with Grant Cruikshank still in the box serving a slashing penalty. Cale Makar and Josh McKechney set up Parker Foo.

In overtime, the Bandits outshot the Vees 6-1. Makar and Dennis Cesana set up Ty Mappin, who redirected the pass past Robson at 3:17.

The Vees were given eight power plays, but couldn’t convert, while the Bandits went one-for-five.

The Vees return to action Monday at 4:30 as the home team against the host Coubourg Cougars.
