Vernon cashspiel A qualifiers set for 3 p.m. today

The A side qualifiers are set for the Prestige Hotels Curling Classic this afternoon (3:00) at the Vernon Curling Club.

Calgary’s Steve Petryk and New Westminster’s Brent Pierce will square off in the first of two men’s A side qualifiers at the Prestige Hotels Curling Classic this afternoon (3:00) at the Vernon Curling Club.

Petryk advanced after beating Japan’s Yusuke Morozumi 9-5 in A side quarterfinal play Friday night. Pierce stopped Vancouver’s Andrew Bilesky 5-3.

Saturday morning, New Westminster’s Jay Wakefield stunned Calgary’s Matthew Blandford with an 8-7 comeback win to earn a berth in the other A qualifier, also at 3 p.m.

Trailing by two points heading into the eighth end, Wakefield cracked a three-ender to earn the upset. He will meet Edmonton’s Jamie King, who recorded a pair of three-point ends in his 7-5 win over Pete Fenson’s Bemidji, Minn. rink Saturday morning.

The B bracket qualifiers go Sunday at 9 a.m., while two more will advance through the C side Sunday at 4 p.m.

The championship game goes Monday at 3 p.m.
