Jakob Marshall was clutch in the shootout as the DCT Chambers Coyotes clipped the Scotia Bank Lightning 7-6 Sunday in the Winter Classic Bantam Rec Hockey Tournament final at Civic Arena.
Parker Wadsworth also converted his shootout attempt for the Coyotes, who blew a 6-2 second-period lead. Dex Elders (2), Adam Sacht, Graham Moss, Cole Martin and Wadsworth had regulation goals.
Julian Haynes earned two assists and goalie Jacob Holland took game MVP, who was only beaten by Sam Eggert in the shootout.
Brett Lambert (unassisted) and defenceman Leland Riguedell levelled things at 2-2 before the Coyotes went up by four.
Landon Currie registered a hat trick and Lambert also scored as the Lightning forced extra time.
The Bolts bounced Penticton 6-3 in their opener with Currie getting 2+1 and other goals coming from Heart & Hustle winner Lambert, Lexes Adams, Branden Lehoux and Sam Frisby, Sean Reid and Hayden Vardon anchored a dynamite defence.
In Saturday play, the Lightning edged Westside 6-5 with Currie supplying 2+1 and singles going to Adams (shorthanded), Frisby, Cam Mackenzie and Lambert. Leland Riguedell and Jed Halvorson each had two assists. Adams took the Heart & Hustle.
The Scotia Bank crew then crushed the Chilliwack Hitmen 6-3 to reach the final.
Lambert provided 3+1 for the Bolts, who were the recipients of a barrage of body- and head-contact hits during the final 40 minutes.
Halvorson, a new minor hockey player who has shown amazing improvement, scored a beauty behind the Chilliwack net by banking the puck off the goalie, while Lehoux bagged 1+2. Mackenzie was awarded the Heart & Hustle as his positive attitude, consistent effort and constant smile was a definite boost.
Bolts’ net detectives Rowan Wood and Isaac Waldemaras, had an amazing four games.
In Saturday preliminary action, the Coyotes iced the Penticton Velocity 7-4 and grounded the Westside Warriors 6-3 with hat tricks going to Wadsworth (MVP) versus the Velocity and Marshall and Elders against the Warriors (goalie Noah Foufoulas MVP).
The Coyotes opened the 10-team tourney by shading the Castlegar Millionaires 5-4 with Haynes and Elders each bagging a deuce and Sacht handling the offence in front of Foufoulas.
The Corbett Office Supply Spartans lost 5-3 to the Kamloops Jets in the B final with Kevin Sullivan (1+2) and Evan Winther pacing the attack. Goalie Chris Moore was named the Spartans’ Heart and Hustle award winner.
The Spartans stopped the Chilliwack Hitmen 5-3 Saturday with Jim Brodoway, Alex Laurila, Paul Rogers, on a sizzling solo rush, Sullivan and Evan Winther supplying the goals.
Laurila scored on the first shift of the game when he batted in a Rogers rebound and the Spartans hung on for a 5-4 win over Penticton.
Sullivan clicked on a sweet one timer from Winther, and then on his next shift, stole a puck in the slot and fired a rocket five-hole. Winther then scored on a great Sullivan feed from behind the net. Darius Stone (1+3) scored the winner late in the second after Sullivan and Winther created a turnover.
Austin Bosquet pulled the hat trick as the KT’s Restaurant Blues upset the league-leading Talon Benefits Hawks 6-2 in Midget action Sunday night at Civic Arena.
Goalie Austin Goss was spectacular for the Blues, who led 3-2 at the ice clean. The 6-3-1 Blues got other goals from Rowan Lewis-Hatherley, Nicholas Stanhope and Nik Wasylyk. Bryton Stead and Landon Munk replied for the 9-2 Hawks.
The Vernon Authentic Plaque & Trophy Blazers tied Salmon Arm 6-6 and outlasted the North Okanagan Knights 9-6.
Chad Lindenbach (6) and Yanik Fillon-Murphy (4) led the 7-3-3 Blazers’ attack. Cameron Hitch had three helpers versus the Knights, who got three goals from Tim Bartel and two from Tristan Tulak.
Devils dust off Flames 5-1
Finnian O’Keefe scored three times as the Sub City Donair Devils dusted off the Bannister GM Flames 5-1 in Pee Wee play Sunday at Civic, avenging a loss the previous Sunday in the Vernon tourney final.
Seb Wenger and Chapperon Chillihitzia added singles for the 7-2-2 Devils, who had a solid Dalton Stenberg in net. Jacob Brewer replied for the 6-3 Flames.
Teigan Derkach had a breakout game with 2+1 as the Devils outlasted the Lumby Stars 9-6 Saturday. O’Keefe had four snipes, while Wenger had two assists.
Josh Litven and Drew Mackenzie each pulled hat tricks for the Stars.
Tage Kineshanko was busy between the pipes for the Stars and made several breakaway stops to keep it close. Stars of the game were Kineshanko, Matthew Yaremcio and Mackenzie.
The Stars only had 10 players as they fell 7-1 to the Winfield Bruins Sunday. Yaremcio was in net and robbed a number of Bruins.
Cameron Pryor scored a great goal on a series of great passes from Mackenzie and Kineshanko. Stars of the game were Pryor, Morgan Holland and Kineshanko.
The Stevenson Mechanical Blues ambushed the Salmon Arm Askew’s Foods Tiger Sharks 11-3 Sunday night at the Shaw Centre.
Cody Webb, Zack Laranjo and Reid Lawrence each had 2+1 while Braydie Allen-Webber added two goals for the Blues.
Kael Black, with 1+2, Colton Riguidel and defenceman Michael Pusey (1+1), with his first of the season, rounded out the scoring for the mechanics. Fellow d-man Angelina Mayer was strong.
Goalie Sam Knox went the distance and made a number of big saves to help the second-place Blues (7-2-2).
The Butcher Boys Titans tied the first-place Winfield #1 Bruins 3-3 and drew 3-3 with the North Okanagan Knights.
Tyson Sampert and Sean Howard each had two-goal outings, while singles went to Miles Wohlford and Talon Williams. Landen Harrison had three assists for the 6-2-2 Titans.
Ice Rockets, Ducks tie
Every Monday, Vernon’s Ice Rockets and Mighty Ducks share practice ice at the Wesbild Centre, but on Saturday they went head to head for the first time in North Okanagan Atom Super League action, tying 4-4.
Five minutes in, Ice Rocket Liam Reid whipped a dee-to-dee pass to Zac Funk, whose point shot deflected to Maddex Minard in the slot. Minard opened the scoring with a low blast to the short side.
Just past the midway mark of the period, Rocket Sapien Joe won a defensive zone draw and charged up the ice. Quinn Soon banked it to the streaking Joe, who launched a heavy wrister in the net.
Late in the first, Reid and Funk again played catch inside the Duck line. Reid took Funk’s return pass, cut in off the right boards, and roofed it from 30 feet.
Off the ensuing faceoff, Mighty Duck Cole Grevatt put his flock on the board with a slick solo effort.
Maisun Ang-Hamilton took off on a shorthanded rush, centering to Grevatt who poked in his second. Seconds later, Duck Jacob Wettlaufer found Cody Beckner in the clear for the equalizer.
Winger Bradley Halvorson’s determined digging in the Duck end freed the puck for Ben Reinhardt and he buried a rising high-slot shot. Down one, the Ducks’ shifty Jacob Wettlaufer set up Kristian Hovdebo on the doorstep to tie things up.
With the ice tilting in the Ducks’ favour, Ice Rocket goalie Eric Foufoulas stood on his head. He shut the door on a Duck breakaway and three times plucked sure goals out of the air with his trapper.
The Vernon M&K Ready Mix Demons gave up two third-period goals and bowed 4-2 to the North Okanagan Black Knights in Atom action Sunday at Wesbild.
The Demons trailed 1-0 after the first period, but found some life midway through the second when Kevin Morgan recorded two snipes 60 second apart, with one assist going to Gage Stoll.
Goalie Kassidy Schaper-Kotter faced 30-plus shots on goal.
