The Vernon Heat rebounded from three straight losses to end on a high note at the Ice Breaker Midget Fastball Tournament last weekend in Kelowna.
The Heat, sponsored by Royal Canadian Legion #25 and coached by Tamara Dumont, capped the event with an exciting 12-11 win over the Kelowna Mustangs Sunday afternoon.
Shelby Munk smacked a two-base hit to left field for an RBI to open the scoring in the first inning. Kelowna rallied with five runs in the second inning, only to be matched by a five-run spree by Vernon in their at bats.
The Heat cranked out another five-run burst in the third frame, with Megan Vadnais and Desiree Turnbull scoring. Caitlin Rolke made a great dive and roll to steal home.
The Mustangs kept pressing with four runs in the fourth inning, but Vernon’s defence held strong.
The Heat opened with a 9-2 loss to the Mustangs Saturday.
In the second inning, Vernon loaded up the bases but stranded runners.
In the fifth inning, sisters Dallyce and Lexie Edwards scored the team’s only runs, both by stealing home.
The Heat bowed 16-0 to the Kelowna Warriors in their second Saturday game.
In their first game Sunday, Vernon fell 9-5 to the Salmon Arm Acers.
Lexie Edwards smashed a ball to centrefield for a double, and while playing third base, she nabbed two line drives for outs. Keara Crandlemire made a double play at first.
