Vernon Jackals jumpstart rugby season

Vernon Jackals kickoff Okanagan Rugby Union season against Penticton Harlequins Saturday at Grahame Park.

They worship Adam Kleeberger, whose epic beard and tackling prowess made him a Team Canada celebrity in the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

They train hard, play hard and enjoy a soda or two after 80 minutes of sweat-till-ya-drop action.

Meet the Vernon Rugby Club, also known as the Jackals.

The two-time defending Okanagan Rugby Union champions open the 2012 season Saturday (1:30 p.m., Grahame Park) against the Penticton Harlequins.

Veteran Mike Scheller, whose great, great grandfather reportedly helped found the Rugby Football Union in 1871, is high on the team’s talent, led by the forwards.

“We have a lot of depth in our forward pack, and some solid athletes,” said Scheller. “Our back row (flankers and eighth man) are all solid tacklers and ball carriers. Flanker Dan Eyles was our best player last year game in and game out, and he is in fine shape this year as well.

“Our two props – Jarrod Stinn and Bryan Bateman – will both have big seasons for us, and lock Geoff Cranton will provide some big hits for us. In the backs, our tandem of standoff Rob Miles and inside centre Josh Cooper retain the ball very well, and are both very consistent performers.”

The Jackals, who carry about a dozen Fulton Maroons alumni since Scheller has coached the senior high school team for two decades, will welcome a few newbies this season.

“Eric Sundquist (hooker) and Mitch Davis (scrum half) are two new players who could make an impact for us this year. Both are young, but have had some experience playing men’s rugby, but not much.”

Miles, a Welshman, will captain the Jackals, who play for the love of the game and camaraderie. The physical aspect is also alluring.

“Rugby is one collision sport played at an adult level that still allows you to hit, and play the game without modified rules,” said Scheller. “I think that attracts people to play, plus the fitness benefits of the game. Also, we have a very good time as a club, and most of the guys hang out together off the field and in the off season.”

Kelowna, Merritt and West Kelowna round out the Okanagan Union.

The Jackals will attend two tournaments this year: the Missoula Maggotfest, in early May, is one of the biggest rugby tournaments in the world; and the Penticton Sunfest tournament, June 9-10.

Scheller has no problems poking fun at himself at being one of the ageless veterans.

“This will be my 23rd year playing with the club and I continue to get crappier every year. I have served as president and player/coach for about 16 of those years. I have put the time into rugby because it is a great way to spend a spring and summer, and I have met a lot of great people world wide in this game.”
