Vernon Lakers down Dawson Creek

Vernon Sladen Moore Lakers ice Dawson Creek Canucks 13-0 to jumpstart Halloween Female Atom Hockey Tournament Friday night.

The Vernon Sladen Moore Lakers got off to a spooktacular start in their Halloween Female Atom Hockey Tournament Friday night, icing the Dawson Creek Canucks 13-0 at Kal Tire Place.

Brook Lawlar led the Laker attack with five goals, with two apiece coming from Paige Braychaw, game MVP Mackenzie Miller and Emma Roine. Bailey Alexis and Kristie Vassberg each contributed a single in support of netminder Katrina Winstanley.

Canucks’ goalie Chelsea West was busy in the crease, and was named Dawson’s MVP.

Vernon battled Kamloops and Kelowna Saturday in the four-team tourney. The gold-medal game goes this morning, 8:45, at Civic Arena. The third-place game is at 7 a.m., at Civic.

Meanwhile, the Nixon Wenger Vipers opened a Pee Wee Tier 2 tourney in Salmon Arm by falling 6-4 to Kamloops Friday.

The Vipers found themselves down a pair of goals in the first two minutes, but rallied to tie it before the intermission. Call-up Anne Cherkowski tapped home the first goal, followed by a Maddex Minard breakaway snipe.

The teams swapped singles in the second period, with Cherkowski pocketing her second, assisted by Porter Trevelyan. Jakob Wettlaufer, from Maisun Ang-Hamilton and Jacob Jones, had Vernon’s other goal.

Issac Thomas, who came close to converting on a penalty shot, was named the Vipers’ game MVP. Aidan Spraggs took the loss.

Vernon faced St. Albert and North Shore Saturday.
