The host Vernon Panthers recorded touchdowns on each of their eight possessions Friday afternoon at Grahame Park.
The result was a 53-7 Okanagan Varsity Football Association win over the Valleyview Vikings of Kamloops.
Panther quarterback John Garvie followed up a B.C. AA Player of the Week performance by tossing four touchdowns, and going 8-of-10 for 189 yards.
“Our focus for the week was to improve our passing game and I thought we accomplished that,” said VSS head coach Sean Smith. “John did a good job involving six different receivers and it was nice to get Levi (Nicholas) involved more extensively.”
Josh Hyer, a Grade 10 student, had two nice catches and got into the end zone twice.
Zac Kronbauer was 6-for-8 on extra points, and added an 85-yard kickoff return for a TD.
Defensively, Karson Patommel led all tacklers with five, while Zach Hyer added four and an interception.
“We had some new faces in practice this week so it was nice to get our reserves in for an extended period of game action,” added Smith. “Jesse Bielski impressed in his debut at linebacker (three tackles) and Tyler Semeniuk had a great game at tackle, collecting three tackles and a sack.
“Our goal this season is to be able compete with the big boys. If we want to do that, we have to develop depth at all positions, so this was a good opportunity to do that.”
The Panthers, who are 2-0 in league play, and 4-0 overall, entertain the Salmon Arm Golds Friday, 2 p.m., at Grahame.
In other Okanagan varsity play Friday afternoon, the Fulton Maroons used four TDs from Mike Williamson as they manhandled the Golds 48-22 for their first win of the season.
Williamson reached the endzone twice on the rush (five and 35 yards), once in the air (15 yards) and again on a 50-yard fumble recovery.
Fulton, who led 21-15 at the half, got other offence from Tyler Liefke (nine-yard reception), Darrien Broomfield (five-yard reception) and Max Champman (two-yard run).
QB Tye Kitzman completed 11-of-20 passes for 184 yards with one interception.
Chapman led the ground assault with 101 yards on 15 touches, and was equally good defensively with a team-high five tackles. Broomfield earned 82 passing yards on five catches, while he and Sikandar Ahmad each delivered four tackles.
Broomfield and Kyle Dennis each had a sack, and Brandon Isaac and Kobe Romanovitch supplied picks.
“It was nice to get the monkey off our backs and get a win finally,” said Fulton head coach Mike Scheller.
“Our kids played great and played like they should. We played fast and aggressive for the first time all year.
“Our defence really improved since last week – we eliminated the big plays against us and took five turnovers, three interceptions and two fumbles.”
Fulton’s defence only surrendered seven meaningful points, and Scheller gave the credit to defensive coaches Darryl Thomas and Kevin Stecyk.
Scheller also praised the two-way play of Chapman, and the work by offensive linemen Trent Smith and Quinn Miller, who helped create space for the Maroons’ running game.
