Vernon’s Amy Edwards finished one win short of a playoff berth at the Tim Hortons B.C. Junior Women’s Curling Championships in Chilliwack.
Edwards, who curls with third Sydney Hofer (Vernon), second Kylie Tokairin (Enderby) and lead Courtney Woo (Coldstream), ended the eight-team round-robin with a 6-4 win over Juan de Fuca’s Mariah Coulombe Sunday night.
The North Okanagan foursome, coached by Dale Hofer, built up a 5-1 lead with singles in the second, fifth and sixth ends, and a deuce in the third.
Coulombe counted consecutive singles in seven and eight to make it 5-4, but Edwards scored one in nine and then ran the Vancouver Island rink out of rocks in 10.
Edwards, who finished at 3-4, racked up earlier wins over Coquitlam’s Briana Egan (8-4) and New Westminster’s Dezaray Hawes (7-2).
Hawes and Victoria’s Shawna Jensen, both 4-3, battled in a Monday tiebreaker, the winner meeting Nanaimo’s Kalia Van Osch (6-1) in a semifinal later that day.
Defending Canadian Champion Corryn Brown went 6-1 to advance to this morning’s gold-medal game.
The junior men’s and women’s champions advance to the M&M Meat Shops nationals, January 18-26, in Liverpool, N.S.
Brendan Cliff’s Armstrong-Vernon rink finished at 1-6 in the junior men’s playdown in Chilliwack, their lone win a 9-3 decision over New Westminster’s Nick Parker on opening day.
Cliff is backed by Vernon’s Matthew Schiman, Deven Schmidt and Matthew Young, and coached by Sandy Farynuk.
Tyler Tardi’s Langley rink went 7-0 to advance to today’s championship game. Cameron de Jong (6-1) and Nolan Reid (4-3), both of the Victoria Curling Club, met in the semifinal.
