A Vernon trio made finals at the B.C. Senior Tennis Championships last week at the Jericho Tennis Club in Vancouver.
Murray Bennetto won his singles final, while Ray Kimoto won his doubles final and lost in the 75 men’s singles final, and Meryl Ogden lost her singles championship match.
Bennetto earned an impressive victory in the men’s 50 singles final as he defeated Tim Shoveller of Vancouver 6-2, 6-1. In the semis, the former Hong Kong pro turned back Pat Macken of Vancouver, 6-3, 6-3.
Ogden, in the women’s 50 singles, brushed back Colleen Ostlund of Vancouver 6-1, 7-5 in the semis, but lost 6-1, 6-2 to Karen Clarke of Vancouver in the finals.
After defeating Norman Hughes of Vancouver 6-1, 6-1 in the semis, Kimoto lost 7-5, 6-4 to Anthony Mears of Vancouver in the 75 men’s singles final.
In doubles, Kimoto and Gordon Verge of Parksville won the 75 men’s title by stopping the top-seeded team of Lewis Hayashi and John Walsh of Vancouver 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the semis, Kimoto and Verge defeated the No. 2 duo of Howard Lowe and Hughes 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Bennetto and Stephen Kimoff lost 6-1, 6-3 to Pat and Tony Macken of Vancouver in the men’s 50 doubles finals. Bennetto and Kimoff grounded Robert Excell and Shoveller 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in the semis.
Kimoto’s next Masters tournament is the 126th Vancouver Island Grass Court Championships, July 21-27, in Cowichan Bay.
The 87th Hankey Cup Championships go June 29-July 1 at the Kalamalka Country Club.
