Vernon Vipers ground Merritt Centennials 5-3

Liam Finlay nets winner in Vernon debut as Vipers outlast Merritt Centennials 5-3 in BCHL play Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

Liam Finlay, TJ Dumonceaux and Mitch Meek each recorded a goal and an assist as the Vernon Vipers grounded the Merritt Centennials 5-3 in B.C. Hockey League play Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

Thomas Aldworth opened the scoring for Vernon in the first period before the Cents took the lead on second-period powerplay goals by John Schiavo and James Neal. Liam Coughlin and Finlay, with the winner in his Viper debut, put the Snakes up 3-2 before the second intermission.

Dumonceaux and Meek converted back-to-back powerplay goals five minutes apart in the third period before Merritt’s Nick Fidanza completed the scoring with 2:55 to play.

Jarrod Schamerhorn made 28 saves for the win. Anthony Pupplo had 28 stops for Merritt.

The Vipers (8-5-0-1) entertain the Trail Smoke Eaters (8-6) Wednesday night at The Big Wheel. The Centennials dipped to 9-7.
