The Vernon Vipers nearly blew a three-goal lead, but hung on for a 6-4 B.C. Hockey League win over the Trail Smoke Eaters Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.
Thomas Aldworth, named first star, salvaged the win with a pair of third-period snipes after the Smokies had battled back to make it 4-4.
Adding singles for Vernon were Kenny Citron, with his first of the season, Liam Finlay, on a powerplay, Anthony Latina and Riley Brandt.
Vernon led 3-0 midway through the second period and outshot the Smoke Eaters 55-19.
Countering for Trail were Connor Brown-Maloski, Scott Davidson, Bryan Basilico and Max Newton.
Jarrod Schamerhorn shaky at times in recording 15 saves. Trail keeper Brett Clark earned third star for his 49-save performance.
Vernon, now 23-11-1-2, hosts the Prince George Spruce Kings Friday at the Big Wheel, followed by the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Saturday.
The Smoke Eaters dipped to 13-22-0-2.
