Vernon minor hockey product Alex Jewell is now a member of the BCHL Salmon Arm SilverBacks.
The 18-year-old forward was involved today in a three-way trade involving the Penticton Vees and the Powell River Kings.
The SilverBacks traded 20-year-old defenceman Sean Flanagan to the Vees in exchange for Jewell and the Vees then sent 18 year-old Noah Henry to the Kings for 19-year-old forward Steven Iacobellis, who then also landed in Salmon Arm.
Jewell is a 5-foot-11, 175-pounder who won a Royal Bank Cup last season with the Vees as a rookie. He has three goals and 12 points in 29 BCHL games. Iacobellis was one of the premier point producers last season with the Cowichan Valley Capitals, posting 13 goals and 40 points while securing a scholarship to the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
SilverBacks’ GM Troy Mick has improved his clubs depth while getting younger and adding some much needed scoring punch. He is extremely pleased with the two players joining his club, last in the Interior Conference.
“Alex is a skilled player with a great offensive upside that will fit nicely into the youthful core we’re assembling,” said Mick. “He proved himself last season in our league by cracking that great Vees lineup and we can’t wait for him to become a SilverBack. In Steven we’re getting a proven scorer and a player, who was put up great numbers at every level. He’s fast, he’s smart and he’s going to look great in black and white.”
Mick says it was tough to let Flanagan leave the Shuswap.
“Sean was a key contributor to our club this season; he wasn’t just a player for us but an assistant captain as well. We are very pleased with the deal we’ve made and it provides Sean with an excellent opportunity to excel before he moves on to the NCAA next season.”
Earlier today, the SilverBacks traded 20-year-old forward Jason Trott to the AJHL’s Whitecourt Wolverines in exchange for future considerations.
Trott, a New Westminster native and former Portland Winterhawk, spent two years in the Western Hockey League, putting up eight points over 68 games before joining the SilverBacks early in the season.
The 6-foot-1 winger added four goals and eight points in his short BCHL career in Salmon Arm. Mick Mick says the move to Whitecourt gives Trott an opportunity to join a contender for the Royal Bank Cup in his last year of Junior Hockey.
“As a 20-year-old, Jason was playing lots of minutes in all situations on a young squad here in Salmon Arm; the Wolverines are a good club and he should have no problem fitting into their system.”
