Vernon’s Robbi Kuhn wins Vancouver Island Shootout

Jim Cotter’s Vernon-Kelowna rink reaches semis at Whites Drug Store Classic last weekend at the Swan River Curling Club in Manitoba.

Vernon’s Robbi Kuhn iced Alberta’s Heather Jensen 5-3 to win the $13,000 Vancouver Island Shootout Monday at the Victoria Curling Club.

Kuhn, supported by third Karla Thompson, second Michelle Ramsay and lead Christen Wilson, lost two of her three opening games before going on a seven-game run to the championship.

They grounded New Westminster’s Marilou Richter 4-3 in the quarterfinals, and Japan’s Ayumi Ogasawara 6-0 in the semis.

Meanwhile, Jim Cotter’s Vernon-Kelowna rink was a semifinalist at the $50,000 Whites Drug Store Classic last weekend at the Swan River Curling Club in Manitoba.

Cotter – supported by third Jason (The Gunner) Gunnlaugson and front-enders Ty Griffith and Rick Sawatsky – advanced to the final eight through the C bracket where he outlasted Jeff Hartung of Langenburg, Sask. 6-5 in the quarterfinals.

The Okanagan foursome fell 5-2 to eventual champion Mike McEwen of Winnipeg in the semis, earning $6,500.

McEwen doubled Regina’s Randy Bryden 4-2 in the championship game to pocket $12,000 and their first spiel win since January.

Bryden, who earned $9,000, needed an extra end to brush back Edmonton’s Kevin Martin 7-6 in the quarterfinals and Brandon’s Terry McNamee 5-4 in the semis.
