The Victoria Royals ended their five game road trip with a bang Saturday, scoring five goals in the final 40 minutes en route to a 7-5 victory over the Vancouver Giants at the Pacific Coliseum.
The Royals and Giants traded goals before Victoria tallied three unanswered markers in the second period for a 5-3 lead. Axel Blomqvist scored two goals for the Royals, while Austin Carroll, Travis Brown, Regan Nagy and Taylor Crunk had the other markers. Brandon Fushimi tallied an empty netter to round out the scoring for Victoria. Vancouver had two goals from Joel Hamilton, while Alec Baer, Jackson Houck and Brennan Mennell also scored.
With five assists the Royals’ Brandon Magee tied a franchise record for most assists in a game, while Joe Hicketts’ also recorded four helpers of his own.
Goaltender Coleman Vollrath went the distance stopping 30 of 35 shots for Victoria. Vancouver’s netminder Cody Porter turned away 13 of 17 shots, before Payton Lee stopped seven of nine shots in relief.
The Royals went 2/6= 33.3% with the man advantage, while the Giants went 1/2=50.0%.
The win followed a Friday night 4-1 loss against the Tri-City Americans at the Toyota Center.
The Royals and Americans were scoreless before Tri-City scored two goals in each of the final two periods for a 4-0 advantage. Victoria’s lone marker was tallied by Tyler Soy midway through the final frame. The Americans’ got two goals from Richard Nejezchleb, while Beau McCue and Justin Gutierrez also scored.
Royals’ goaltender Coleman Vollrath stopped 31 of 35 shots on net, while netminder Eric Comrie turned away 24 of 25 shots for the Americans.
Victoria begins a four game home stand with a pair of contests against the high flying Kelowna Rockets tonight and the two teams will face off again Wednesdayt . Puck drop for the game is at 7:05 p.m
