Victoria sends 11 to Winter Games
The Canada Winter Games only happen every two years. Needless to say it’s a mighty privilege for those up-and-coming athletes chosen from the South Island.
Greater Victoria sends two coaches and 11 of B.C.’s 350-member team to Halifax for the Games, Feb. 11 to 27.
Leonardo Maekawa of Sooke was recently announced to the team for men’s figure skating. Maekawa finished sixth in Canada among novice men at the Skate Canada Junior Nationals in Victoria last month.
Victoria-based coach Cynthia Tucker leads B.C.’s men’s curling team of Calvin Heels and Daniel Wenzek from Victoria, along with North Vancouver’s Maxim Langlais and Duncan’s Nolan Reid.
Squash superstars Tyler Olson, Lindsay Seginson and Nicole Bunyan populate the team with the most Victoria influence.
B.C.’s men’s hockey team (midget) is represented by Steen Cooper of Duncan, who plays for the South Island Thunderbirds of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. Victoria’s Jeff Kerr joins the team as manager.
Vic athletes representing B.C. individually are Shae Zamardi (gymnastics), Vivian Yan (badminton), Kessia Derks (synchronized swimming), Brandon Laur (Target shooting) and Deion Green (wheelchair basketball).
