It’s likely to be an emotional start to the night on Friday ahead of the Victoria Shamrocks’ home game against the Coquitlam Adanacs.
That’s because late Const. Sarah Beckett’s family will be on hand to drop the ball for the ceremonial faceoff, while members of the West Shore RCMP will be accepting donations for a scholarship in Beckett’s name.
“We’re focusing on the good things, like family and how Sarah benefited the community and how her time with the RCMP made her a role model for young women,” said Jason Sperling, Shamrocks operations manager.
“We’re just glad to help (with the scholarship).”
The $2,000 scholarship, an initiative by the Capital Regional District, is slated to be awarded annually to a youth entering a career in law enforcement.
Raffle tickets in support of the scholarship will also be for sale on Friday and for the rest of the season, with a lucky fan being selected to drop the ball prior to the Shamrocks’ final home game of the season on July 28.
