Victoria’s Mosquito ‘A’ (Red Eagles) and Mosquito AAA (Black Eagles) did Victoria proud this past weekend at the B.C. Provincial Baseball Championships, hosted in Cloverdale July 30 to Aug. 2.
Each team, comprised of the top divisional players from five parks throughout the city, competed against nine other teams from around the province in six games to claim provincial gold.
The ‘A’ Red Eagles, coached by Burke Stancil, Trevor Lines, Brent Yager and Daromir Rudnyckyj held a 5-1 record over the weekend, losing only one game to Abbotsford during tournament play. In their final game, the team rallied in the 6th and final inning, scoring six points to come from behind and beat Abbotsford 7-3 in the final game.
The AAA Black Eagles, coached by Dave Swinton, Bob Finlay, Dan Carrier and Mario Biello went undefeated during the course of the weekend to beat Ladner 11-6 in the finals. It was a victory made all the sweeter for this team, which includes most of the same players and the entire coaching staff that was defeated in only one game last year – the provincial final.
