Another standout performance from netminder Brett Mirwald and goals from four different suspects – including a game-winner from captain Sam Honzek – led the Vancouver Giants to a 4-3 win over Everett Silvertips on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre (LEC).
The Giants are now on a roll, not just because of back-to-back wins against two of the top clubs in the Western Conference, but because they are now 9-3-1 since the calendar flipped to 2024, including a perfect 5-0 on home ice during that stretch.
The latest wins had head coach Manny Viveiros smiling and congratulating the team.
“We’re a completely different team than we were three months ago and part of it was just it takes a while for the kids to understand what we need to do to be successful with our group, and obviously we added some veteran leadership to our group, which makes a difference, where we’re solid in my opinion all the way through our lineup here,” he shared.
“And you’re able to roll all four lines for the most part and rest some of your big guns so to speak for the latter part of the game, when you really need them. That’s something that’s been a big difference with our group here. The whole identity of our group and how we want to play and need to play, the kids are understanding it. Right now we’re at a point where we don’t even have to say it on the bench. They’re saying it themselves and going out and executing it,” Viveiros said.
Saturday’s win improves Vancouver’s overall record to 22-24-3-0, now tied for sixth in the Western conference with Kelowna. Everett falls to 32-17-1-2 this season.
Scoring for the Giants on Saturday was Cameron Schmidt, London Hoilett, Tyler Thorpe, and Honzek. Ten different players registered a point in the win.
Meanwhile the night before, G-Men also emerged victorious over Prince George on home ice at LEC.
A late goal from Logen Hammett and 36 saves from Mirwald helped the Vancouver Giants to a 3-2 win over the Cougars.
Providing the Giants’ goals on Friday night was Schmidt, Sam Honzek, and Logen.
Next up, the Giants play in Seattle tonight (Friday, Feb. 9) and back home at LEC Saturday to take on the Wenatchee Wild. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
