Logger Sports sawed through Port McNeill last weekend for the eighth year in a row.
Athletes from all over B.C. visited the North Island to take part in the 10-plus events offered, going head-to-head against a talented group of local competitors, namely, Nick Russell, Thomas Symons, and Allison and Dawn Briscoe.
The event was MC’d once again by Ben and Michelle Lefler (it was their seventh year hosting the competition).
Ben Lefler had the crowd in stitches with some great one liners all Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday, he mentioned to this reporter that Logger Sports “is better than going to the beach.”
Local competitor Allison Briscoe ended up placing first in the axe throw, first in the single buck, second in the Jack and Jill event, and second in 100cc hot saw.

Briscoe, who lives in Hyde Creek and is only 16-years-old yet still competes against the adults, said her favourite event is the single buck, where she turned in a fantastic time of 18.5 seconds.
On Sunday, Briscoe competed at the STIHL Timbersport qualifiers in Port McNeill, trying to qualify for the Canadian Championships which is held in London, Ontario.
When asked how she prepares for Logger Sports, Briscoe said she plays volleyball, which “helps with the hand-eye coordination for the chopping and sawing, and we also do a lot of conditioning at volleyball too, running five or six sets of stairs.”
Briscoe said she practices throwing axes “sometimes for fun” but also has been trying lately “to do a block a night of chopping, and alternate that with single buck and stock saw other nights.”
She added she really wanted to thank the North Island communities for coming out to support the Logger Sports athletes.
“It’s great to have the support from the community, and it really shows when they’re out here watching under the tents in the rain. It’s great to see and it really helps the sport.”
