Prince George Cougars proved why they’re the top team in the Western Conference on Saturday night, Dec. 16, as they defeated the Vancouver Giants 9-2 at the Langley Events Centre.

Giants Head Coach Manny Viveiros said Vancouver “got outclassed in all phases.”

“I thought we started off okay and then we just fell apart,” Viveiros commented.

“Everything we talked about as far as what we had to do against this team to have a chance to get a win tonight – we just didn’t do it. Puck management, odd-man situations and just making sure we had coverage around the net – we didn’t do that tonight. We just didn’t have anything going.”

Cougars opened the scoring 7:21 into the first period after a wrap-around by Heidt just made it over the goal line.

Then, Prince George scored three times in a span of 4:26 at the tail end of the first, to extend their lead to 4-0.

The Cougars expanded their lead to 5-0 just 27 seconds into the second period.

Giants got on the board 36 seconds later to make it 5-1, but the Cougars scored again, just a few minutes later.

At the 13:45 mark of the second, Giants got one back after Julian Cull fed a perfect pass from Edwards in the high slot, who beat goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen on the blocker side to make it 6-2.

Cougars would add another goal before the second period was done, then added two more goals in the third.

With the loss, the Giants’ record falls to 12-18-2-0 this season. Prince George improves to 24-9-0-0.

Prince George outshot Vancouver 38-23.

Next, Giants welcome the Thunderbirds to the LEC this Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. in their last game before the holiday break.
