VIDEO: Vanderhoof speed skaters dominate in Nechako Lake Open

Vanderhoof’s speed skaters reigned supreme during the at-home regional meet this weekend, winning races in six out of eight divisions.

The four-person team relay race of 2,000 metres was won by team yellow, which consists of Fort St. James’ Duncan Aidan and Vanderhoof’s Madison Selly, Connor Ebert, and Nicole McBride. They raced against team blue: Vanderhoof’s Alexis Seely, Logan Sewell, and Hayden Zacharias, as well as Prince George’s Kieran Hanson.

On Nov. 26 and 27, Nechako Lake Open, the third speed skating meet of the season, took place with over 80 speed skaters from Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, Williams Lake, Dawson Creek, and Prince George in Vanderhoof’s arena.

Skaters from the age of five to over 30 participated in individual and relay races of varying distances.

Seven-year-old Anya Dhillon of Vanderhoof was able to start well in her races this year, she said. She won second in a 200-metre race and third overall in her category.

Division 1: Terry Lazaruk placed second overall over four races.

Division 2: Connor Ebert, Madison Seely, Logan Sewell, and Nicole McBride placed second, third, fourth, and fifth overall respectively over five races.

Division 3: Hayden Zacharias, Theo Clarke, and Marek Baker placed third, fourth, and fifth overall respectively over five races.

Division 4: Elizabeth Carpenter and Mark Watney placed first and fourth overall respectively over five races.

In the fundamentals category, Emily Clarke and Stephen Treyken placed first and second overall respectively over five races.

Division 5: Briar Folkeard, Kai Hara, Ivan Legebokoff, and Leander Ebbott placed first, second, fourth, and fifth overall respectively over five races.

Division 6: Holden Carpenter, Ariana Scott-Unger, Anya Dhillon, and April Seely placed first, second, third, and fourth overall respectively over five races.

Division 7: Zoe Bueckert, Kayven Hooper, and Madalyn Lazaruk placed first, second, and third overall respectively over five races.

Division 8: Chloe Stephen, Jayce Stephen, and Kavita Dhillon placed first, second, and third overall over four races.
