Vikes hockey all-stars, Rams crush West Van football, Brewery bursary for national rugby player

Vikes Amanda Kurianowicz, Kathleen Leahy, Rosie Beale and rookie Kristina Walters-Shumka are Canada West field hockey all-stars

The University of Victoria Vikes had four players named Canada West All-stars following the final regular season field hockey game between Calgary and UBC. Vikes head coach Lynne Beecroft was honoured as the Canada West Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her 31-year career.

Following a goal differential count after UBC’s two wins this weekend, Oct. 18-19, over Calgary, the Vikes finished second overall in the Canada West conference and enter the CIS Championships in Toronto as the No. 3 seed, Oct. 30 to Nov. 2.

Third-year Vikes Amanda KurianowiczKathleen Leahy and Rosie Beale were named to the all-star list, while rookieKristina Walters-Shumka was also given the nod.

Rams crush depleted West Vancouver foes

The visiting West Vancouver Highlanders put up a solid effort against the host Mount Douglas Rams on Friday (Oct. 17). But with a reported roster of just 15 players, the Highlanders were unable to compete with the Rams, who won 34-0.

The Rams are now 5-0 in AAA B.C. football and face South Delta (5-0) on Oct. 24, 2:30 pm at Goudy Field.

Brewery bursary for national team rugger

Local rugby player Julianne Zussman is the beneficiary of the Pacific Western Brewing’s Hometown Heroes bursary. Zussman, a senior national team player, will receive a $2,000 bursary at a Velox Rugby Club ceremony tomorrow (Oct. 23).

Zussman will use the money to recoup expenses incurred in the build-up for the 2015 Women’s Rugby World Cup, where Canada was second.

She’s also an assistant coach with the Vikes women’s rugby team and referees high school rugby.

Zussman is one of 16 athletes designated as community heroes in B.C. by PWB.
