The UVic Vikes raised the Barnard Cup premier men’s Island rugby championship for the first time since 2006, beating the Castaway Wanderers 35-17 at Wallace Field on Saturday (Nov. 29).
It ended a five-year streak during which the James Bay Athletic Association held the cup.
Promising national team fly half Guiseppe duToit recorded a hat trick of tries for UVic and kicked three converts with additional tries coming from captain Remi Anctil, James Pitblado, Dustin Dobravsky and Crosby Stewart. John Braddock, Clay Panga and Ciaran Hearn each scored a try for CW, with Hearn also kicking a convert. Anctil’s try was the first of the game, coming in the 25th minute. It was 17-5 in favour of the Vikes at half time.
CW managed to knock off JBAA in September, 29-14, qualifying them for the Barnard Cup final, though JBAA are 4-3 in CDI Premier League play while CW are winless in seven games.
