After winning their first two Canada West women’s basketball games, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack have dropped four straight.
The Pack dipped to 2-4 after being swept by the host UVic Vikings last weekend, falling 73-65 last Friday night, and 96-88 Saturday.
“It was a better showing than last night,” said WolfPack head coach Scott Reeves of Saturday’s effort. “Victoria shot well and was deserving of the win.”
The Vikes were up 25-19 after the first quarter, but TRU outgunned them 22-18 in the second to cut the deficit to 43-41 at the half.
Vernon’s Diane Schuetze, a fourth-year post, led the WolfPack with 26 points and seven rebounds. Jen Ju (4th year guard, Vancouver) had 19 points.
Victoria was led by Chelsea McMullen with 18 points.
The WolfPack host the Brandon University Bobcats tonight and the University of Regina Cougars on Saturday.
In other Canada West action, the UBC Okanagan Heat fell to 0-4 after back-to-back weekend losses – 81-53 last Friday and 71-50 Saturday – to the host Fraser Valley Cascades.
The Cascades led by 10 points at the half, and went on to hold the Heat to just six points in the final quarter.
Guard Madison Kaneda, a Vernon product, led the Heat with 11 points.The only other Heat player to hit double figures was Roslyn Huber with 10.
“I thought that we came out way better tonight,” said UBC Okanagan head coach Heather Semeniuk. “I really thought the girls played well. We just had little lapses. We simply have too many people out.”
Fourth-year posts Audrey Siebert–Timmer (Calgary) and Huber (Kelowna) both fouled out with five minutes to play.
The Heat were without Vernon’s Emily Kanester, a first-year guard, who tried to play on a bad shin, but managed just three minutes.
The Cascades were led by Tessa Klassen (Winnipeg) with a game-high 19 points.
“We had some really good minutes from Krystal Schouten tonight,” noted Semeniuk. “Even though she only had four points, she had 11 rebounds and really started to box out and play that more physical game inside that we need.”
The Heat host their CIS home opener for against the Regina Cougars, 6 p.m. tonight at UBC Okanagan gym.
They entertain the Brandon Bobcats Saturday, 6 p.m.
In men’s basketball action, the Cascades stuffed the Heat 108-63 Saturday night.
