VIU badminton saves best for B.C. tourney

Vancouver Island University’s badminton team came up with its best results of the season when it mattered most.

The squad finished third at the B.C. Colleges’ Athletic Association championships on Friday and Saturday on the Lower Mainland.

Leading the way for VIU at the provincial championships were the mixed doubles team of Bryan Cassels and Jenny Aronson, who went undefeated in a round-robin format.

“Favoured to finish in the top three, Aronson and Cassels stuck to the game plan in each match, and were rewarded with the top spot,” said Dawn McGuire-Reeves, the team’s co-coach, in a press release.

Also medalling for VIU were Pat Thompson, who won bronze in men’s singles, and Jennifer Abrahamson, who took bronze in women’s singles.

The Douglas Royals are provincial champions, while the VIU Mariners end up fifth in the BCCAA’s cumulative standings.

The Mariners’ mixed doubles team will now prepare for nationals March 3-5 in New Brunswick.
