Last week we reviewed girls’ volleyball results from the past season. So we’ll even things up now by acknowledging top elementary and secondary teams from boys’ competition…
At the elementary level, Mike Lundine was the coordinator for the bantam boys’ volleyball league for schools with a population of more than 275 students. He sends word that playoffs concluded with a final four tournament held at Quarterway.
At that tournament, the district title was captured by the entry from Hammond Bay Elementary, coached by Ellen Knight. On the winning squad were players Brandon Groot, Stefan Prairie, Jakob McDermid, Luke Hoefer, Aiden Holzwarth and Cole Latiff.
Runners-up at the tournament were the North Cedar Intermediate boys coached by Gregg Halfyard. Representing their school were players Drayden Cairns, Keaton Sanford, Riley Gannon, Jayden Morgan, Liam Pakosz, Seth Walde, Talon Backmann, Liam Hobbs and Colin Murcheson.
The third-place pennant went to the Randerson Ridge squad. Team members included Corin Cooper, Connor Cartmill-Jones, Kirit Lalh, Logan Palmer, Trevor Dorman, Anoop Bassi, Roy Cheng, Dex Aspin, Ryan Banks, Thomas Duff, Campbell Arnold, Nick Warnock, Connor Milne and Austin Reiber. Coaches were Barry French and Gary Gribling.
A separate league for smaller elementary schools was co-ordinated by Glen Murphy and wrapped up with playoffs held at Cinnabar Valley. First place overall went to the host team, coached by Annette Noble and comprised of players Kyle Herle, Bruce Avender, Ethan Katzberg, Levi Sutton, Andrew Mattes, Liam Moore and Ryder Keay.
Placing second in the district was the Seaview entry coached by David Cooper. On the court for their school were Samuel Colyn, Tayden De Pol, Mathew Gilson, Nick Hill, Aidan Hodges, Roger Johnnie, Liam Khoo, Austin Lehmann, Brandon Ockey, Clayton Pool and Wyatt Soderstrom.
Third place went to the team from Rutherford.
At the secondary level, congratulations go to the AA senior boys’ team from Woodlands. The Eagles finished their season with an excellent fourth-place finish at provincials. The AAA senior boys’ team from Dover Bay Secondary also had a strong season, winning the North Island tournament and placing ninth at the provincial championships.
And having now acknowledged the above teams, the Thorpe Report is going to take a break during August to enjoy the remainder of the summer.
Whatever your sport, a reminder in closing to play your hardest, play fair, and show good sportsmanship.
