Vernon Christian School Royals were relegated to the consolation side of the B.C. Senior Boys A Volleyball Championships in Terrace.
The Royals went 0-5 in the round-robin, falling in straight sets to the Credo Christian Kodiaks of Langley, 25-18, 25-14, the Duncan Christian Chargers, 25-21, 25-17, the Carver Christian Phoenix of Burnaby, 25-21, 25-21, and the defending provincial champion, and tournament hosts, Centennial Christian Seahawks, 25-16, 30-28. VCS lost in three games to Kimberley’s Selkirk Storm.
The Royals’ senior girls squad earned a trip the B.C. A championships this week in Kelowna by defeating the Elkford Celtics in a thrilling five-set marathon in a wild card challenge game Friday in South Slocan.
Jason Reedyk’s squad dropped the first two sets before rallying for a 26-28, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 15-8 victory.
“We made a lot of unforced errors in the first two sets, but still managed to have chance to win set point in each of the first two sets, but couldn’t finish,” said Reedyk.
“Once we settled in, we took control of the play and left the other team scrambling to return the ball.”
Claire Oordt-Bosman led the way with 10 kills, four aces and eight blocks, inclouding two huge stuffs in a row on Elkford’s top hitter with the Royals up 12-7 in the final set.
Rebecca Vanderdeen chipped in with spot-on passing, five kills and two aces.
Morgann McAmmond subbed in to provide five important kills.
“I am proud of the way we responded after losing two close sets.”
The Royals will take on Chetwynd in their first match at provincials.
