The Volleytech Volleyball Club under-13 girls Black spiked its way to a Tier 2 provincial title in Abbotsford at the end of April.
After losing to the West Kelowna Thunder in pool play, their only loss of the tournament, Volleytech rebounded to defeat the Thunder in the championship final in two sets, 25-21 and 25-23.
“The girls had played solidly and consistently all weekend,” said coach Anita Toneatto. “I wasn’t sure if they would be able to bring that same level of spirit and fire for the final after playing such a tough semifinal. They were up for the challenge and were outstanding.”
Volleytech defeated BCO Noir of North Vancouver, ranked second entering provincials, in three sets. Toneatto said several of her players had their best matches against BCO Noir, who came away with bronze.
Volleytech received outstanding play from Brooklyn Olexa, Megan Pickford, and Sophia Toneatto. Sophia Manuel and Alexis Grant gave their best performances in the final. Volleytech won a hard-fought semifinal in three sets with amazing play by Kayci Loewen, Robyn Kimmel, Sophie Brooke and Elena Shearer.
Toneatto said their goals for the weekend was never result orientated, but to have the players work on their skills, come together as a team and have fun.
“I think the march to the final was a huge bonus and a big thrill for the girls,” she said. “They peaked at the right time and were rewarded for their hard work all season.”
