With a potential playoff berth hanging in the balance, the Rutland Voodoos came up short Friday at the Apple Bowl losing to Seaquam 27-24 in B.C. high school football action.
At 2-2, Rutland would need some help to get into the post season, as Seaquam and Handsworth (both 3-1) have the inside track on the top two spots in the Pacific Division.
The Voodoos’ undoing pretty much came on two key plays.
Leading 10-7, Rutland gave up a big touchdown late in the first half. Then to start the second half, the Voodoos fumbled the opening kick off and Seaquam took advantage with another score.
“Basically that combined minute of play was the difference in an otherwise exciting and physical battle,” said Voodoos coach Peter McCall. “That was a tough loss.”
Dakota Robertson had 10 tackles, rushed 13 times for 100 yard and caught a pair of touchdown passes.
Matt Klak rushed for 188 yards and a TD, while Zach Hemmett threw for 175 yards.
Kyle Solloway had a fumble recovery, three battled balls and four tackles.
The Voodoos, with only a slim mathematical chance of making the playoffs, will close out the regular season Friday at Argyle.
Terry Fox 31 Mt. Boucherie 18
The Mt. Boucherie Bears threw a scare into one of B.C. high school football’s top teams before falling to the Terry Fox Ravens Friday night at the Apple Bowl.
The unbeaten, Eastern Conference-leading Ravens are now 5-0, while the Bears are 1-3-1.
At 18-12, it was a one touchdown game late in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Bears and Ravens exchanged scores, before Fox put the game away with a late TD.
“It was a very physical game and our offense put a lot of pressure on their pass defense,” said Bears coach Milke Godwin. “I think we gave them as good of a test as anyone.”
Quarterback Tyler Toic threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for one.
Spences Schmidt caught four passes for 121 yards and a touchdown, while Dayton Moore was four for 101 yards and a major.
On defense, a big night for Taylor Knoll with 13.5 tackles, while Chris Smith had 7.5 tackles and an interception.
Wyatt Fagan had six tackles and a sack.
The Bears will wrap up the regular season Friday at 6 p.m. at the Apple Bowl against Lord Tweedsmuir.
KSS Owls 15 Centennial 0 (forfeit)
The Owls pushed their record to 4-1 without taking to the field, as the Centennial Centaurs forfeited their game Saturday in Kelowna against KSS.
The Owls haven’t played for there last two weeks as they prepare for their regular season finale on Friday night in Burnaby.
KSS will take on St. Thomas More (3-1-1) in a battle for second spot in the Eastern Conference.
