In September, family, friends and co-workers are teaming up to inspire hope for more than 12,500 people in B.C. living with Parkinson’s.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Parkinson Super Walk, set to take place in more than 20 communities across B.C. On Saturday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. in the Parksville Community Park, participants will utilize their superpowers to generate awareness of the disease and raise funds for education, resources and support services. Proceeds will also be invested in vital research, including into exercise for symptom management.
“This is our second year in our new location” local organizer Doug Pickard said. “We live in such a beautiful place and it seemed natural to hold the walk right on the ocean, utilizing the boardwalk in our local community park here in Parksville. There are plenty of benches for rest breaks. The walk can be done as a whole (approximately two km) or you can just walk part of it.”
Many walkers have been busy seeking pledges, but people can stop by and walk in support. There will be drinks and snacks, and all walkers receive a T-shirt and a chance at prizes. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. at the gazebo and the walk starts at 11 a.m. Draw prizes will be announced at noon.
