Bruce Wenting, president of the Mission Racers speed skating club, received the President’s Award at the Sport BC Athlete of the Year awards in recognition of his outstanding volunteer efforts.
“Bruce has made quite an impact on his club and in his region,” said Dave McQuaid, president of the BC Speed Skating Association. “The Mission Racers hosted a most successful B.C. championship last season and are a growing club.”
The Mission Racers held the Fraser Valley Regional FUNale recently, billed as the season-ending event for those not attending B.C. championships. The event drew 65 skaters for a mixture of traditional and fun races.
The host club had 19 entries from the younger ranks while senior members took on official roles for the day.
“We felt that we had the right blend of events so everyone enjoyed the racing,” Wenting said. “Our youngest Racer is five years old and started just two weeks ago and our oldest participant was 65 years old.”
