Two local lacrosse teams have returned from provincials with some new hardware.
The Victoria Youth Field Lacrosse’s U18 Tier 2 team, which practices out of the Velodrome and Royal Bay fields, defeated Ridge Meadows to earn bronze during the B.C. Lacrosse Provincials in Burnaby earlier this month.
Kicking off the tournament, the team lost 11-8 to Ridge Meadows, but won 15-5 against Penticton. But it was a 7-5 victory over Surrey that propelled the team to a spot in the medal game.
Despite their efforts, Victoria lost 9-8 in a close game to Burnaby, sending the team to the bronze medal game against Ridge Meadows. Victoria defeated Ridge Meadows 11-9 to bring home bronze.
Victoria also picked up the Subway team sportsmanship award in the U18 category, which exemplifies sportsmanship, respect, honour and the integrity of the game of lacrosse as a team.
Athletes with Royal Bay Secondary’s girls’ lacrosse academy also returned recently from the B.C. Women’s Field Lacrosse provincials with a bronze medal.
Abbey Sutton, Avery Sutton and Jayden Sandford, along with senior Royal Bay lacrosse player Paige Sutton as assistant coach, helped lift the Pac Rim U15 club team to a close 10-9 win over the Coquitlam Adanacas.
Abbey also picked up the round robin most valuable player award and Avery picked up the MVP award in the bronze medal game.
