Kelowna’s Joachim Nierfeld and Rosie Schaich each brought home gold medals from the Western Canadian Senior Indoor Tennis Championships last weekend in Edmonton,
Nierfeld defeated Ontario’s Scott Jeffreys 7-5, 6-2 in the age 40 category men’s singles.
He also claimed the men’s doubles title with a perfect 4-0 record, pairing up with Vancouver’s Stephen Kimoff.
On the women’s side, Schaich defeated No. 1 seed Anne Lydon to take the age 45 crown.
Both Nierfeld and Schaich have been added to the Team Canada roster and will compete in the upcoming World Senior Team Tennis Championships held in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida from April 21 to 26.
Extremely active in the local community, Schaich works as a club pro at Brett Wilson’s Global Fitness Club while also handling duties as club pro at the Lakeview Heights Tennis Club.
Nierfeld is the head pro at Global Fitness and at the Okanagan Mission Tennis Club, and is currently the tournament director of the third Annual Kelowna Futures $15,000 ITF Professional men’s tennis tournament taking place at the Parkinson Recreation Centre courts from June 28 to July 6.
