The Westshore Valkyries felt a sting of defeat last spring when their arch-rival Castaway Wanderers captured the B.C. Premier Women’s Rugby championship title.
So far this season, the Vals are showing signs that any challenge to the crown will have to go through them.
On Saturday at the Juan de Fuca field, Westshore reeled off its ninth straight win without a loss in league play, beating Burnaby Lake 26-15.
To date the Valkyries have amassed 430 points, with just 93 scored against,both far and away league bests.
Seattle has played well this season and sit in second at 6-3, but they’ve not been able to show the same level of dominance that Westshore has over opponents. Cowichan and Castaway-Wanderers sat tied to start the week at 5-5, while Capilano (4-6) and Burnaby Lake (0-10) round out the league standings.
With the league regular season champion slated to play the fourth-place team in the first round of the B.C. playoffs, there’s a very real chance that last year’s finalists may meet up. They’ll go head to head April 8 at Windsor Park in Oak Bay, but this Saturday, the Valkyries will travel to the mainland to face Burnaby Lake in the back end of a home-and-home.
