The Comox Valley Whalers women’s hockey team travelled to Port Alberni on Sunday, Jan. 13 with just enough players to put two lines on the ice.
Facing a much younger and possibly faster opposition, the Whalers came on full force in the first period, keeping the score tied at zero. Despite the fact that some key players were missing due to work commitment, team member Tera Kasubuchi thought the effort was exceptional. “We had to work hard to keep the pressure on. I think we managed to give them a good game. They definitely had their work cut out.”
A few breakdowns cost the Whalers in the second and third period. Sky Zimmerman (Brian McLean) continued her domination on the board while Sky Niskasari (Canadian Western Bank) kept her composure and saved the day on a few occasions, covering for her rookie linemate. The final score was 4-0 for Port Alberni.
The Whalers have a chance to bounce back as they play Port Alberni Friday night at 7:30 at Sports Centre #2 and will be on the ice again Saturday at 8:30 against Nanaimo at Sports Centre #1.
