Wheelchair basketball is back for another season in Vernon, and organizers are on the lookout for participants.
As there are not enough people with disabilities to run a full program locally, there is a need for able-bodied athletes to augment the numbers.
There are a total of eight fall sessions on Thurday nights (7-8:30) running Oct. 17 to Dec. 5 at the Hillcrest Elementary gym (1822 Francis St.). The winter session goes Feb. 6 to March 13.
The drop-in fee is a bargain at $5, and the recreational-level program is integrated so that able-bodied participants can play alongside athletes with disabilities.
No experience is necessary, and the program is ages 14 and up.
Kelowna’s Art Kelz will host an introductory skills workshop on the opening night to provide newcomers the fundamentals of wheelchair basketball.
Kelz also has several loaner sport chairs of various adult sizes that he will with him each week. Please bring any additional chest straps and other equipment you may need, as the chairs have a snowboard buckle-style seatbelt and calf straps only.
